It’s Syliva and Marek’s wedding. Over the course of a hot summer’s day, a family gathers to welcome a newcomer into their midst. But as the vodka flows and the guests hit the dance floor, passions boil over and the limits of love are tested.
Set in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 2023, Beth Steel’s heartbreaking and hilarious portrayal of a larger than life family struggling to come to terms with a changing world, opened at the National Theatre in January 2024, and was nominated that year for an Olivier Award for Best New Play.

| John (M) 40s / early 50s | Hazle’s unhappy husband, hell bent on changing his life ‘whoever it may hurt’. South Yorkshire or Nottinghamshire accent |
| Uncle Pete (M) Late 60s / early 70s | Married to Aunty Carol and brother to Tony. He and his brother have not spoken in decades, due to an unresolved feud over the 1980’s miners strike 40 years ago. A bitter, haunted man. South Yorkshire or Nottinghamshire accent |
| Tony (M) Late 60s / early 70s | Father of the three sisters. A gruff grieving widower. Damaged from losing his wife and the destruction of the mining community which was the whole of his life. South Yorkshire or Nottinghamshire accent |
| Marek (M) 30s | A hard working Polish migrant who has successfully built a local business. He refuses to accept the micro bigotry of his new inlaws. His singing ‘turn’ is the culmination of the wedding breakfast. Polish accent. |
| Leanne (F) Playing age 15 | Hazle’s angstridden teenage daughter, who causes chaotic drama during the reception and opens a can of worms. South Yorkshire or Nottinghamshire accent |

Play scripts will be available from mid August for members to borrow. Please ensure they are returned by Monday 28 September.

Rehearsals will commence in mid October on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Some weekend rehearsals will begin in the New Year.
