Audition Notice: Lovesong

Auditions for our January 2026 show will be taking place this summer. Abi Morgan’s ‘Lovesong’ is a beautiful story of one couple, told at two different points in their lives: as young lovers in their 20s and as worldly companions looking back at a lifetime spent together.

This is the story of an old couple’s love life inspired by the TS Eliot poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.

The story

This is an extraordinary depiction of a very ordinary relationship, where past and present selves collide. All relationships have their ups and downs, where the optimism of youth and newlywed squabbles contrast with the reflection of hindsight and the wisdom of shared experience. As the older Billy and Maggie confront the inevitable end of their journey together, their younger selves as William and Margaret serve as a poignant reminder of the past – full of dreams, arguments, and devotion. Love is a leap of faith.

The production

Originally staged by Frantic Assembly, this is a piece that requires a lot of physicality from its actors. While we are not aiming to go as fully physical as Frantic is known for, movements must be deliberate and precise, sometimes stylised and choreographed. Therefore a cast who are comfortable exploring physical theatre is a must, as we will be working with movement choreographers. That being said, we are not expecting dancers, but rather a willingness to explore physicality as a means of storytelling.

Acting will mostly be naturalistic but intermingled with stylised elements in our movement, projection, set and lighting etc. The set will be a mixture of interior and exterior locations of a suburban house and garden.

The ensemble

This really is an ensemble piece, with all four parts pretty evenly sized. Rehearsals will nearly always be all four of you together, as you’re nearly always onstage together to some degree. We will work together on devising the staging, so an open mind is a must!

Actors will need to look like they could feasibly be younger or older versions of the same person, so this will factor into our casting process. Chemistry is essential, as all combinations of our four cast members appear together throughout the play.

I do not want to be overly specific on casting ages, because it all depends on the pairings we have available. The only essential fact is that the younger pair of actors look like they could be at the beginning of a marriage and that the older pair could have enjoyed a long and happy life together.
